From Ashes to Art: How Handcrafted Memorial Jewellery Is Made in Our Studio

Quick takeaways
  • All stages are handled in-house by master jewellers and glass specialists — from receiving ashes to final checks.
  • Internal tracking ensures the right ashes are used and remaining ashes are returned safely.
  • Choose discreet sealed-chamber pieces (ashes jewellery) or visible memorial glass gemstones.

The loss of a loved one is a deeply troubling life event to have to go through. When the time comes to create a lasting memorial keepsake, you want to feel confident that you’ve made the right choice.

No part of this process should feel impersonal, which is why it makes sense to choose a jewellery design studio that is willing to open up the doors and let you see the process from start to finish.

The thoughts of sending your ashes to an unknown factory is a scary prospect. How can you be sure they will handle the ashes correctly? And how do you know they’ll make sure the right ashes go into the right piece of jewellery?

When it comes to memorial keepsakes, we recommend choosing a company that makes you feel confident in the process. This might mean being honest and open about the jewellery design process, while also making it easy to track your order, or to even visit the workshop to see it being made. All of these things will help you to feel more confident in the process.

Why in-house matters

Plenty of design studios have a store front you can visit, but then outsource the process of actually making your jewellery. This might make you nervous for a number of reasons. First, you don’t really want your loved one’s ashes being moved around a lot without your knowledge. You also want to know who will be making your jewellery, and you’ll want to feel confident there is no chance of a mix up. This is why choosing a jewellery designer that handles every stage of the process in-house is essential.

Step by step process for creating your keepsake

When you trust Ashes With Art with your memorial keepsake, you can be confident the process will be transparent and clear from start to finish. Our jewellery design process typically looks like this:

  • You send the ashes to us, and we receive and mark them with our internal tracking system. This ensures we always know exactly where your loved one’s ashes are, and also ensures we can return unused ashes once your jewellery is complete.
  • We prepare the materials for your jewellery, handing the ashes with the utmost care at every stage in the process. Every single one of our jewellery makers knows what it means to lose someone close, and how important it is to treat these ashes with respect.
  • Every stage of the casting, sealing, stone-setting and engraving is completed in house by our incredibly skilled team.
  • Final checks are carried out, and then we package up your jewellery along with any remaining ashes fragments. This ensures that no ashes are lost or discarded from our studio.

Meet the makers

Ashes with Art is owned and operated by Siobhan Jones and Danny Spiers. They are supported by an incredibly talented team of master jewellers and glass specialists. We also have a support team handling customer enquiries.

You can see the team in action at our workshop in Worthing. Many people like to visit us to drop off their ashes in person and arrange a tour of the facilities at the same time so they can see how we work with ashes and handle these most precious memories.

Handmade versus mass produced

When it comes to memorial jewellery, there really is no contest between items handmade in-house versus items that are mass-produced in a third-party facility. It is essential for customers to be able to see where their lasting keepsakes are crafted, as this is the only way to feel confident and comfortable with the process.

Looking for the right setting? Discreet sealed-chamber pieces keep ashes inside the metal (ashes jewellery); visible flecks and colour come from memorial glass. Curious about the wider process? See how cremation jewellery is made.
